CONTEXT

An abstraction and translation of weaving a Thai traditional pattern – Lai Nam Lhai

Pha Lai Nam Lhai directly translates to flowing waters and rivers in Thai, reminiscent of the winding rivers of Chao Phraya.

The act of typing as weaving together letters, words, sentences...

Initial explorations into what typing to create specific patterns could look like – translating the direction of how a thread is woven into a loom. This proved to be too difficult and prescriptive, which was not my main intention of the typing and web experience.

IMPACT OF DESIGN SOLUTION

Impact on time and effort for roster planners

From a power user –

"1 week’s worth of time can be reduced to 5 hours – 2 hours for inputting on Roster Monster, 3 hours on my spreadsheet.”

– Roster planner from Emergency Medicine Department, Singapore General Hospital

A collective pattern built over time through typing

I hope to allow people an opportunity re-engage with a craft through a digital and accessible medium – while also giving them a chance to export the pattern, download the font, and learn about the cultural context behind Pha Lai Nam Lhai.
